Hello and Welcome.
A few weeks back, CUP played a rare-chicago-birthday show with some amazing results.
Let me tell you about it...
The place was a little bar called "Red Line Tap". One gay, area resident has described this place as "great". and "A great little place to see a band." He should know.
One non-gay, non-area resident said "Imagine cutting a long rectangle down the center [longways]. One of these rectangles is the bar, the other is where you guys will be playing." One of the band member's wives even commented on the place saying "oh! can you get me a drink? I am thirsty"* If she only knew.
As Fight club was about to finish up on WGN-TV (or 10:30, for those of you who weren't there) CUP was about to go on. After a quick sound check, we opened with "All girls are stupid liars". It was a hit. You could tell, because all of the fans remained being seated and playing pool. This is always a good sign.
Let me tell you some of the highlights:
In honor of Joe Duncan's Birthday, we played an oldie but a goodie. Melissa & Amber.
I am not sure why we played THAT song, but let me come up with a reason really quick. Here it goes:
Melissa & Amber has a lot of history with anniversaries or birthdays. Many people feel that the story of M&A is one of "coming of age". The two central characters grew up together, bonded, and grew apart all in the telling of this amazing story. It also, as many fans pointed out, was when CUP really started becoming a real band. A fans reaction can be summed up with this metaphor: Just at the sun rises and falls, it takes some effort to realize that the sun does neither. It is stationary, like the song Melissa & Amber. It is US that indeed rises and falls. Melissa & Amber will always be there for us. We must never take it for granted. All of life's special accomplishments will forever be compared to, referenced towards, and compared from that song. Enjoy your birthday Joe Duncan!
Back to the Blog:
I could tell this charged him up a little because the very next pool shot he took was a difficult 4-6-2 combo. He didnt make it, but I think the background music inspired him to take that chance.
The other thing you could notice was that the energy level just kept rising the longer we played ultimately climaxing in the form of Dont Touch the Blood. Great set.
Gavin Gantner was there and he brought a lovely lady there that I thought was someone else. Matt Guidera showed up with the IFDS. This was a reunion show for all of the CUP ladies (+1). And that one girl showed up 1 hour late and drove something like 3 hours to get there. ya.. She was there. Thanks for making the trip... you.
I am sure I can understand her frustration. I guess it would be like me opening up a mass email and finding out i am being replaced for some upcoming shows. Maybe it's the way I was raised, but that seems like something you would ask the person ahead of time, and not have them find out in a Mass Announcement. Oh well, I guess I have a lot to learn about my own feelings.
until next Blog...
